Is it absolutely necessary to remove the X brace when changing the fuel filter on a convertible? Or is there a shortcut/trick that someone has out there?

Re: Convertible fuel filter change (emoshn)
The whole X-brace has to come off. I tried droping just one side, but i needed more access room. Sux, but it has to come off.
1990 Convertible
I have alway dropped the XBrace. I don't think I would try a short cut, if you screw up it will leak gas or stripped the nut, the fuel line will need to be replaced. Too many bad outcome to save an 30-40 minutes.
Well I will be the lone dissenter it looks like. I unbolted just the front end of the brace and it sagged down enough to give me enough room to do it. It's tight, but I got it done.
Have an 89 conv., changed the fuel filter three times, never had to lower the X brace...just removed the shield covering the fuel filter and there she was, 15-20 mins. tops...
Just did mine this afternoon. Had plenty of room from pulling my car onto ramps. I only had to partially remove my one brace. I left one bolt in by the rear right tire and pivoted the brace out of the way from the filter. Check for O-rings on your fuel lines, after removing my filter I found no O-rings  Hardest part for me was replacing the fuel filter clamp back onto the frame rail :mad

I'm with RJ, drive onto ramps, remove heat shield, remove filter, assemble in reverse order.
BUUUUT When you do remove the brace, you can clean all the little pieces of crap out of there before re-installing. I finally found the power steering pulley spacer I had to special order.
If it is a LT1 I believe you need to drop the brace. The LT1 is a lot harder to get to the filter then the L98 was. (at least for me) The LT1 has the cats right in the way. Dont loose the o-rings off of the pipe and try to do it with a near empty gas tank. Good luck!!
Lt1' s need to have at least the front left part of the brace let down. Just loosen the rear and take out the nuts from the studs in the middle of the brace. Then it will drop down. You don't have to take the whole brace out.
I couldn't get the fuel filter top line loose still so I took the lines loose at the fuel rail. This let me take out the filter and the upper line together. You have to have the special fuel line tool to take the fitting loose at the Fuel rail.
