Default My mechanic has suggested...

Hey all. I brought my car to a local Corvette repair shop and they told me I needed two things.

#1 - A harmonic balancer. Mine seems to be going the wrong way or something. What do these things do? What difference will I feel once it's replaced?

#2 - Front springs. I told them to do the shocks as well - Bilstein as someone here had suggested. They told me I should go with, ahh, hmm. I forget the name. It's a real common one though. When I said I'd rather go with Bilstein, they told me I had the option of going with the Z51 shocks if I wanted to. I told them no. Should I have gone along?

Anyways.. This is the beginning of the process of bringing my car back to showroom condition. I saw a VERY nice 90 while I was at their shop. I'm totally convinced I want my car to be Charcoal now! Man is that a hot looking color for a C4. Also, I know I want 1990 rims. Not 1988 or 1989.

I will be bringing my car to this shop every other week with about $600.00 for repairs, updates, etcetera. I can't wait to see what this car will be like in a few months.. I really do love this thing!

Losing the harmonic balancer can be a bad thing(can't be timed right etc), I replaced mine with a Fuidamper unit but have yet to see it run.

you should feel some vibration or hear something if your balancer is goin bad. And get the bilsteins.

What kind of "updates" are you having done to it? If anything id replace the sensors.

The harmonic balancer sits just behind the crankshaft pulley.

It dampens out crankshaft vibrations and is necessary to assure long bearing life.

BTW, they don't "run the wrong way" but sometimes one or both of the two concentric metal rings separates from the elastomer between them. At such time the damper must be replaced.

By updates I actually mean restorations. The interior has problems. The drivers seat leather is cracked (the car sat for a long time) and various screws that hold the plastic of the interior together aren't actually doing much. These cars bang around a lot so I guess this is inevitable.

So, I'm going to get all new interior pieces. While I'm at it, I'll be switching my interior to the dark grey that I saw in the 90 I was drooling over this afternoon. :) I think I'm going to end up bringing this car to showroom condition before I do the performance mods. It's not like I do a lot of racing anyway...
