Default I need ALDL Class 101

Hello Again To The Forum,

My car has taken a back seat the last few years due to putting kids through college, lack of space so the same kids could work on their Corrado's and GTI's etc. One of the last undertakings I was doing was to learn as much as I could about the win ALDL program on my laptop. I also have an autoxray scanner that I bought to learn about what my car was doing, and to try to understand why it was trying to do things. My question is this....I read many posts about the ALDL issues people have as fer as getting it to run, etc...But is there anyplace either here, website, or even a GM service publication that can describe to me what the baseline readings should look like for my 1985? I have no trouble getting information to output. Can I assume that any information I am getting can be intelligently interpreted? Like ac on or off, o2 crosscounts, rich/lean indicators? etc..... What would a normal healthy car not run like, but read like? It seems without knowing information like this, and what readings you could count on, you couldn't begin to evaluate what the aldl or scanner was providing. I get differing readouts from each piece of equipment. Should inlet air temps or coolant temps read in individual degrees? In open and closed loop? Is TTC information valid? When either of these are plugged in the car seems to jump up in RPM's. Is there any place where I could read about what what my 85 CAN accurately display, and what the optimum readings and fluctuations should be before I even hook these programs up? All or most of the ecms are year specific so would it be reasonable to assume GM would have year specific instructions on how to interpret the information on a year to year basis? If anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. That connector was put under the dash for someone to be able to interpret information....where did they learn what to expect, and how to read it?Someone must have wrote THE BOOK on it...
Thanks in advance for any information anyone can provide to enlighten me...
Geoff

The Factory Service Manual has what each of the readings should be, at least my 89 FSM does..Also if you post your readings on here, there are people wiith enough knowledge that they can tell you if the reading is off , if it is on , or what it should be.....WW
