Default Tachometer for my '90

Here's the deal, my tach has croaked. When the engine is off the stinkin thing is at "0" and as soon as I start it zip it maxes out, it absolutely pegs. I've changed the filter, looked for shorts and all that garbage...NADA

I don't want to take the cluster out, all I want to do is keep track of my RPM so here's a practical solution I've come up with, or part of one that I'm looking for some insight to complete.

There are inexpensive analog tachs on the market that have a 2''-3'' face which can be mounted on a vehicle and my question is ... Where in the devil can you mount the thing in a '90? I want to be able to actually see it and I don't want to trash the dash with holes. Has anybody else gone this route?

I'm stuck at DUH!

Remove the cup holder lid and make a bezel that fits the opening, a smaller tach would probably fit down in one of the cup holders? Or if small enough, don't even remove the lid, just open the lid when you want to see the tach..

You can always replaced the cluster with a used one from a 92. Thats what I did, works perfect now. The 90's are known for bad tachs.

Pop Evans had a nice write-up on how to fix this back in August.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-g...ch-repair.html

Be sure to read the entire post and look at the link in the write up to "iroczone.com"

A fairly common problem but can be fixed cheaply if you are willing.

Also, Auto Enthusiast magazine in its premier issue had an article about the subject. They had a pictorial on removing the Tach Cluster BUT suggested sending the unit off to a commercial repair shop. I think it was Corvette Parts Service Co. $200 was the price quoted in the article.

I personally know nothing about them or even if the web site is good!

If it was me, I would do it myself and save the $$$$ but everyone's skill level is different.
