I am running at NE Dragway Friday and I am thinking of adding some timing. Right now, I have a stock 88 L98 set at 6*. I have added an open lid, 2,600 stall converter, Hooker Super Comps with 2 1/2" true catless duals, and a 3.07 gear. Anyone foresee any problems jumping it to 10*?
I only know a little bit about this so that probly makes me more dangerous than knowing nothing. But, I always like to be the first to respond to a post. So, here is what little I know. I think you should get a scan tool hooked up and make some runs with it the way it is. See what kind of advance you are getting from your present chip. And see what your knock sensor is doing. Then you will know if you can advance it without defeating yourself by having your knock sensor just go ahead and retard it anyway. Okay all you smart guys reading. Am I way off on this one?
You can usually bump the timing up a few degrees at a time until you get a knock or ping. The knock sensor will retard your timing if the engine pings so you may end up losing performance overall.
As mentioned above an open or less restricitve exhaust will causes the engine to run leaner and may cause a ping with less timing advance. I would suggest using an octane booster and advance your timing a degree or two at a time next time you are at the track until you determine the best timing for max performance.
