Ok i have a 86 vette. This is what is done to it, i have the open air lid with K&N filter, a power coupler with the foil. It came with the fast pack what could it hurt. I put Accel 8.8 wires and the super coil in it along with the mods. Now the car started to act funny. It will start right up get to about 105 and the idle will go up and down. Once i start driving it will do it but not so bad. I punched it and it wants to take off like a bat out of hell. goes to about 20ish the nose drops down, check engine light comes on and i hear it rev like it's in gear but not going anywhere, the tranny shifts and it's off again. If i keep the throtle about half way it's fine. Once i mash it has problems. I tested the fuel pressure and it ran 39 at idle and cleaned the MAF. When i cleaned the MAF it helped with the idle a little. I am going to replace the spark plugs, fuel filter and EGR valve. am i on the right track? Now for that shifting problem what could that be? I checked the fluid it is a bit brown can i change that?
Lack of power could be due to lack of fuel, poor spark or clogged cats. If you recently removed the plugs or wires, verify the correct hookup (it idles pretty well with a crossed pair :bb). Disconnect the MAF cable; if idle improves service the MAF or it's relays, if it gets worse the MAF is likely ok.
It's a good idea to change the tranny fluid and filter. Check for any metal bits in the pan.
Well I did this, I took the coil out and that copper looking nipple thing with a spring on the end of it had some carbon on it. I cleaned it and it ran better. It still feels like it wants to go but something feels like it is holding it back. Ok this was probably not a good idea but it worked before i cleaned the MAF with carb cleaner. It's the only thing i could think of. The screens were dirty and after i did it, it ran ok. I had some transmission trouble and had it serviced i told him to put a shift kit in it. After i had it serviced the guy said it shifted fine and that it most likely was the govener gear that was replaced. No is it safe to drain the fluid and refill it? I was always told never to do drain the fluid from the transmission, it would kill it.
