Is the inside of the plenem and runners supposed to be clean i took mine off and they are all black inside almost like oil. Is this bad or is this normal? I tried to wipe them done but its tough to get in there. Could this cause any problems if there real dirty? thanks Ron
That's normal; due to the EGR exhaust gas feedback.
I took my used base to a local engine builder and had it hot sprayed for $30. It came out very nice and much easier than doing it with carb cleaner as I use on the runners.
One metod I've used on the runners is to spray 1/2 a Scotch Brite pad with carb cleaner and use a section of 3/4" heater hose to pass it through each runner, several times. I finish up with carb cleaner on paper towls.
Unless you have a solvent tank, having someone clean em up is much easier and, to me worth the few $$.
The problems arise when the EGR valve carbon's up and sticks or you get buildup in the TB and on the throttle plates and in the IAC bore. Buildup in the plenum, runners & base isn't usually a problem, but do you realy want to put those dirty pieces back onto your motor??
