Went in the have a slow leak fixed and a bent wheel replaced. I decided to have them balance all four wheels while they were at it.
The tire shop was afraid of snapping the lug and Discount Tire can't do lug replacements. NTB that did the original install of the tires says it's been too long and they need to talk to their manager.
How tough is replacing a lug on the rear of a 92? Anybody done them?
Are the outter edges of the lug stripped, or the innards so the bolt will have to be replaced?
If it is the outter edges (that the wrench goes on) it is easy. Find a 12pt socket barely smaller than the lug and hammer it on gently so that it is wedged onto the lug. Then takea a breaker bar and she'll spin right off. :)
Not hard at all. I've broken quite a few. Once they are broke off it's easy to just tap it out and put a new one in.
Just buy a new stud(they are real cheap) and bring it with you. If they snap off teh old one, you'll have a new one right there handy and there should be no reason why they can't put it in for you, only takes less than a minute.
It's the lug with "lock" lug nut on it. The locking lug nut is still solid and not stripped. The tire guy was said he could try and pull it but saw one of three things happening.
1. Snap the lug
2. Strip the lock lug nut
3. Spin the lug in the axle
It looks like the only choice is to go for it and hope for the best.
I lost my lug lock at the track one night WHILE i had drag radials on. Doh!! I drove home and used the socket method to get it off. 2 minutes later I had all the locked ones off that way. I replaced them with normal lugs. I'm not dealing with that again! :)
I'm tempted to just hook up my impact and go for it. At least I would be home where I could work on it and not worry about someone doing something stupid (other than me).
