My 95 LT1 is having some starting issues. It was struggling to start the last time I took it to the track. Now when I turn the key it sounds like a bomb is going off. It sounds like it is coming from where the starter is located, but I don't want to buy a new starter if it could be something else more serious. Any ideas?
Where is the bang coming from? If it sounds like its coming out of the intake, a backfire, then you have a spark timing problem, way too early. If spark is way too late, the bang comes out the exhaust.

Metallic sounding? or Explosive sounding? Do you "feel" anything? Shudder or a vibration?

The term "loud bang" is a little vague. At this point, it could be anything from, say a leaky injector on #8 causing a misfire to a broken rod flopping around inside the motor.
Let's go back. It had a starting problem last time at the track. Did you get it started and run at that time? Any issues with vitals that day? Oil pressure, temp, acceleration, noise? Were the symptoms similar to what you are now experiencing? Was that the last time she ran?
