Mine run's quick in 0-60 - havn't been to the track since TC and shift kit with tranny upgrade. Prior to new mods my best time was - 5.4 in 330 ft
1/8 mile 8.4 @ 81MPH Should be faster now, sure feels like it. :yesnod:
I must have missed something along the way...Stock for stock L98 vs LT1 (Having owned them both) there is a considerable diffrence, at any speed or take off the LT1 has way more power, not even a fair comparison..I owned a mint 89' coupe L98 Vette Auto, with no cats, 373's air box & foil, custom chip, roller rockers and cat back flowmaster exhaust best 1/8 run 9.31,.. bought a bone stock 94' LT1 6spd, 2nd day I owned the car I ran 8.61 in the 1/8...that's a huge diffrence.
My L98 with gutted cats and 2.75" borlas was quicker and faster than my 97 Z28 6speed(but not by much). Around town I love the torque of my L98, but the revs and mid-range torque of the LT1 is VERY nice. Ive outrun a few LT1 Vettes, but most have been autos, and the M6s I raced...I feel fairly sure that I just out drove the guys.
I haven’t driven in a LT1 vehicle, but have been in a stock GNX from a stop up to 120mph, shifting at +/-6800rpms. I’ve also been demo’ed a 99 Cobra, I’ve owned an Iroc, and been amused by a few big blocks.
Now before anyone cries foul, yes my L98 is just like any other OE TPI engine made, it’s just sucking air for the hell of it after :U4600rpms! And that’s why hopefully soon; I’ll be dropping in my S/R 383 into it!
Anyway my 2 cents is, my near stock 89, 3.33:1, 6-sp with 117K if hooked up right will subjectively hole-shot better than all said above (minus the LT1 –don’t know, haven’t done it!) And as far as Tq exhibitionism, I told my friend who’s never driven a vet before, to floor it and dump the clutch at 2000rpms from a stand still. Well he looked rather nervously amazed at the +75ft posi (ya, I know it’s a limited slip) he laid down, especially since we’re at 4400Ft here at Reno, NV. Hell if I wanted to get stupid, I could burn up a new set of rear tires in an evening! Done that a few times back in the 80’s in my old R-block Firebird.:reddevil
stock GNX from a stop up to 120mph, shifting at +/-6800rpms
either the GNX you were in wasn't stock or the tach was WAY off if it was reading a 6800 RPM shift point... stock turbo Buick motors just aren't capable of turning that kind of RPM's... GNX included.
As far as the L98/LT-1 debate... having and 86 and now a 95... for me there was no comparision.. the LT-1 is faster out of the hole and top end.
Wait, your comparing an 86 to a 95. Of course the 95 if faster. Later model L98's were much quicker than the early ones. I have seen figures as high as 7/10th's of a second 0-60 between an 86 and a 91. Could have been gearing or trans in all cases, but everyone I have spoken with, says, and I agree (having drivin a 86 with aluminum heads and 4+3) the later L98's are faster stock for stock. I now have a 91 6 speed, and it is a very quick car. It may be a freak case, but it does move along....
I think there is too much variability car to car in both engines to accurately pick the best off the line, say 0-60. I drove plenty of both to sure the LT1 is a hands down faster car and it better be its newer. But as far a smashing the pedal from a stop the difference could be minimal between two cars and noticable in others. I owned an L83 that could break the tires loose easier than a 92 an acquaintance used to own. Im not into burnouts nor am i into doing 155. I like both engines. Actually i think a big block or an LS6 has awsome power in all rpm ranges that neither a L98 or LT1 can touch.
Plus all u L98 fans seem to forget that u only have 5 foot pounds of torque on my LT1 and 15 foot pounds of torque on a 92 LT1, yet both LT1's make way more horse power. Plus if u look at any site that has times posted the 0-60 is always faster with the LT1 along with the 1/4. All you claim that the LT1 may weigh more, who cares if I still beat u in a race. The fact is the LT1 should beat a L98 b/c it's newer as should the LS1 whoop up on me. Another thing to add is that a lot of u L98 guyz r comparing ur vette to a Camaro, a camaro is not a Vette get that through ur heads that there's a difference. Also I bet a million dollars that a 01 Ram Air will rape any stock L98 as me in a race to any speed with equal driving so just do urselves a favor and be quiet. You are the type of people who will talk poopie no matter what car u own and not talk realistically. You sound like a gurlfriend of mine who said she can beat my car b/c she's a really good driver(she drove a V6 stang).
PS You people crack me up! Keep up the good work u funny guyz u :jester
Thats funny, All the sites I have seen show faster times on a late model l98 than an early lt1
I have driven both, and stated the L98 seems stronger. The late model lt1's are stronger than the early ones, there is no question about that. Ill see if I can hunt down the 0-60 site for the cars. This particular site, stated that the 91 was faster than the 92/93/94
Usually I dont bench race, but as I stated, I have driven both. But hey, everyone is going to feel there own way about it in the long run....
Not that the people doing the reviews are top notch drivers, but they list the 91 L98 is a 14.8 car and the 92 Lt-1 car is a 14.1 car.
There are a few people on the forum with stock LT-1's in mid to lower 13's.. I don't recall any L98 cars going into the lower 13's with a stock car... most are low 14's to high 13 sec cars.
Not to forget the driver has a lot to do with it.. you put a great driver behind an L98 to an average driver in the LT-1, my bet would be that the L98 would win.
Our family has had 2 L98 corvettes(87,89)and now two LT1's(92,95).
All were auto's with 2.59 gear except for the new 95(3.07)Z07.
The 95 is without a doubt much faster than the L98's and feels faster than
the 92.The 89 L98 ran 13.8,and had all the bolt on mods and 3.73 gears.
The 95 has not been to the track, but I assure you it would have walked all
over the 89.This thing is fast!Maybe it is the performance axle and Z07
suspension combo.
01GT
FWIW, I dyno'd my L98 with headers and duals, de-screened MAF, frisbee delete and an open air cleaner at 246hp Saturday.
MTVette's LT1 with an open lid, K&N and muffler eliminators made 276 hp. The night before, I ran a wheelspinning 13.7 to his 13.9.
Here is another link to another site, that stated the Later L98's were a little quicker than the early Lt1's. Obviously, these numbers are less than kind, but its a comparison of all cars. http://web.missouri.edu/~apcb20/times.html#Chevrolet

A Late model L98 vs an early model Lt1 is a no contest(you can't make up 50hp.). I don't care what your numbers say, an LT1 of any year will rape an L98.
Now a Lt1 Camaro vs a L98 vette, that is different. I believe Lt1 camaros had 275hp? Thats about 25 less then a Late model L98. I can see that being close.
