You lose power up top? I have 3:07s right now and I take off the line pretty nicely. I know if I go up higher I would take off even faster - but is it worth losing power while going 60 and over? I guess it depends on what I want but what do you think?
Re: Is it worth changing gears if... (Sal Collaziano)
Your not going to lose power, your just going to reduce your top speed some and increase your rpms in any given gear at a given speed,,
I personally think for the money the gears are the best choice to increase the performace of a car with out digging into the engine.. I have the 4.10's in my car and absolutly love the feel of the car... Launches real hard and my rpms at 70 in 6th is still about 1850 rpms..
Hey Sal,
What ruby6spd said is correct the only addition I would make is How often are you going to top out?? I went with 4.10's as well and love them, yes theoretically I decreased my top speed but so what the fastest I have ever had her is 130 mph and I dont think I will do that a again. I do however love that acceleration coming of a stop light. THat I use all the time.
So I agree go with gears, if yours is and automatic mabye as high as 3.73's but there are others who can answer which gear is best for your car.
I guess I can't speak for an L98 car but on my auto LT1 when I went from the stock 2.59 gear to a 3.54 I not only gained 5 tenths ET in the 1/4 mile I gained over 5 mph as well.
Someone with more experience than me will hopefully chime in, but I believe some have tested with different gears for the L98 and found that the 3.07 is the best ratio rear. Anything more gets you out of the L98s powerband too quickly. I believe Beach Bum went from a 3.07 to a 3.54 and his 1/4 mile ET went up. LT1s have a higher power band and thus run better with the steeper gears.
Hmm. Thanks all.. Any other L98ers out there with an opinion? I know I've heard about the 3:54 being the best ratio for the C4 but since there is the LT1 and the L98, I don't remember which ratio was for which...

Yea, but Beach is running in the 11's. Sal is running a stock to mild modified L98. I know for an LT1/4 the 3.73 is the preferred gear wth an auto, 4.10 for the manual. I would guess the manual L98 is good with a 3.45/3.54, but what about an auto L98, is 3.07 pretty close to ideal?
I like the feel of m 3.07s on my L98. I like it even more since I dont have to spend money to change it out. Only real test I've done is with my personal rearend though.
