Putting the power steering pump on my 93 is such a PITA. If I put the low pressure hose on first, there's not enough room to move the unit to the correct angle to get the threads lined up to start the high pressure connection. If I connect the high pressure first, theres no room to get the hose over the low pressure side, the hose and the rigid piece don't line up. I know it came off that way. What am I missing? Is there a trick? Do you guys who have done this sucessfully go at it from underneith the car?
I just finished a engine rebuild and just dropped my motor in the car. I will be putting the pump on in the next couple days. If you can wait, I will get pics and step by step on the pump for you !
Now theres an idea. If I had the engine out of the car, it would work. Seems like a lot of trouble to go too. Seriously, I thought about taking the radiator out, but I'd have to drain all the coolant. I've been able to replace the pump before. Whats different this time is the length of rubber hose on the low pressure side. The other one developed a tear, likely from so many pumps being installed and removed, this is the 3rd one. The new hose is 3/4" (id) PS hose, not heater hose. It's stiffer the the original. I've got enough to try some different lengths. I tried the same as the original, and slightly longer. I'm thinking I'll try about twice the length, only without tightening the hose clamps, that way I can slide it up and down the length, leaving enough slack to hopefully move the pump about to get the high pressure hose fitting started. This car is so aggrivating to work on. I guess there is something to be said about a good honest mechanic. I don't know one here.
