There is really no right or wrong answer..........
Big block or small block.
Build what you want.
If racing, smallblock can win yet too. And often do against a Big Block.
Big Block Chevys have Canted valve heads. Big power making factor.
Small Block Chevy engines have been known to run well into the 8's and lower times.
A friend has a 8-second car, SBC powered. The engine is pretty far from stock.

The late John Lingelfelter was known for building 2,000 Hp turbocharged smallblock chevy motors.
I believe he used Methanol alcohol fuel.
That was nearly 20 years ago too.
He was one of the best. And a fantastic driver too.

It is my Dad's car. We were told that 4 or 5 c4's were converted by Lingenfelter with the 540.
