Things were a lot simpler back in the days of carburators & vacuum/centrifigal advance distributors. But gas was cheeper and I sure used to blow a lot of unburned gas out the tail pipe.
The power, mileage, and low polution they get out of today's cars is amazing. But...well, I am an engineer and it'll be a while before I understand it all well enough to dare tinker.
