Knocking noise from the steering wheel
For a while now the steering wheel in my car makes a knocking noise when I turn it. I don't even have to turn it enough to move the wheels. It used to do it only when I started the car in the morning, but now it makes that noise all the time. It sounded like it was comming from the steering column, but I checked and it seems to be coming from the steering rack. I disconnected the steering wheel from the steering rack, and the steering wheel alone doesn't make any noises. I'm dropping the car of at Team Chevrolet on Wed. to have them check it out. I'm wondering if that could be part of the reason why my steering wheel shakes a little bit. Anyone have a problem like that?

Re: Knocking noise from the steering wheel (maduraj)
there is a little rubber thingy in the steering shaft that has a tendency to wear out.
that can cause the column to clunk.

I had this problem and it was the steering coupler. The metal coupler at the end spreads out and the noise is from the gap. This was about a $600 repair (parts and labor).

ouch, that's pretty steep. My extanded warrantee runs out in May, so I hope the dealer will fix it under warrantee.

I have an after market extended warranty and they decided not to pay. I am getting ready to escalate this up their food chain, which if that fails file with the State of Texas on this.
Good luck

I had the same problem. They ended up replacing the rack, the steering coupler, and that rubber spacer and spring. All covered by my GMPP major guard.

Well, I dropped my car off at the dealership yesterday. But I noticed since it was pretty worm here for the last couple of days, that the knocking sound is a lot quiter now then it was where it was cold. Talked to the mechanic today, and he can't hear any noises from the steering wheel. He said he's going to check it out one more time. I think I might have to go there tomorrow morning and see if the noise is still there. If not, I'll have to take the car there when it's 30 degrees ouside.

Just got a call back from the mechanic. He said he thinks it's either the inner tie rod or the steering rack. The tie rod is $660 with labor and the steering rack is $760 with labor.  The're checking into wheather GMPP will cover it. I hope it will. :yesnod:

You gotta be poopieting me...
Why don't they just stick a gun up your nose??? :cuss
Dude, *if* that's the problem, you're ~$500 better off doing it yourself, with Forum help...
...You can buy a lot of nice things with $500...
A rebuilt rack here is only ~$100 exchange; that includes both inner tie rod ends...

Well, talked to them again, and they are already taking the car apart. It is the rack that's going out, and it's all covered under warrantee. But they won't have the car done till around Tuesday :smash:

Got my car back from the dealer yesterday, and I took it to work today. They replaced the steering rack along with the inner tie rods. After I had the drive shaft balanced and all the wheels balanced I was still getting a little vibration from the steering wheel. Now it all gone. What a difference. Car finally drives like new. :D Just for that I had to go to the garage today and I put 4 coats of Zaino on it :D
