I NEED HELP SOLVING A CODE 33 ON AN 85 VETTE. KNOW THIS TOPIC HAS BEEN ON BEFORE BUT CAN`T FIND IT . THE CAR BACKFIRES WHEN START UP AND AFTER WARMS UP IT`S FIND, BUT CARRIES A SES LIGHT. PUT ON OXGEN SENSOR, COOLANT SENSOR, MAF SENSOR, TPS, COMPUTER, CHANGE THE MAF MODULE, AND WIRING CONNECTOR TO MODULE. THE 85`S DO NOT CARRY THE MAF RELAYS. THE WIRING CHECKED OUT GOOD. THAT WAS THE REASON FOR CHANGING THE MAF MODULE. CHECKED FOR VACUUM LEAK AND ONLY FOUND THAT THE CAR HAS ONLY 10 IN. OF VACUUM. WOULD HAVING AN AFTER MARKET CAM CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. THE CAR HAS A GOOD LOPE TO IT. I KNOW THAT WHY THE VACUUM IS DOWN. BUT, WILL IT CAUSE THE BACKFIRE WHEN COLD? PLEASE HELP IF CAN. :cry
YES, THE SES LIGHT IS ON ALL THE TIME. EVEN WITH THE CAM THAT IS IN THE CAR THE SES LIGHT WAS OFF, BUT DECIDE TO COME BACK AND STAY. THE ONLY CODE IS THE 33. AND THE ELECTRICAL PART SEEMS TO CHECK FIND. NOW, THERE COULD BE A FLAW IN MY DIAG. PROCEDURE. SHOULD I CHECK THE WIRING AGAIN? HOPE I HAVE GIVING YOU MORE INFO. TO WORK WITH. :cry PLEASE RESPOND ASAP. THANKS.
Yes, your cam can be the cause of low vacuum and also be the cause of the code 33 because a code 33 will be set if air flow is too low. Low manifold vacuum will cause low air flow. If you don't have any air leaks in the induction system, then I would suspect the cam. Backfiring when cold can also be due to your cam. The mixture is rich when the engine is cold which burns slow and that fact coupled with a large valve overlap, you have combustion still going on with both intake and exhaust valves open and a flame front will propagate from the hot exhaust through the cylinder and through the open intake valve into the intake manifold, BOOM! Changing only the cam and expecting the rest of the engine (not designed for that cam) to work just peachy keen is expecting too much.
how big is the cam? when my car did sumthing liek this i had sum eletric probs like rotor and cap plugs wires stuff like that i also had the burn off module replaced it cost 480 bucks borg/warner its behind the crash pad
my 2 cents jay
10 inches of vacuum! That would have to be a HUGE cam. A stuck egr will cause vacuum to drop, don't know about backfiring but I believe it could. Try disconnecting the vacuum line to it, while running and rapping on it with a hammer, if your idle comes up, then your on to something.
You could pull the egr valve, and spray carb cleaner in the open port, if fluid comes out the other port then this is your problem. These ports, by the way, are on the bottom of the egr valve. I've seen low vacuum cause map sensor codes before, I wonder if this could do the same for maf codes.
I really don`t know the specs. on the cam. when the car was brought, it was there. I have change the cap, rotor, pickup coil, wires, plugs, and coil. I have checked for vacuum leak with a low grade carb. cleaner and could not detect any. The scan tool also displayed normal isc counts at idle. I also replaced the module behind the crashpad and the wiring harness to it.
