The main cooling fan on my 85 stopped working...sort of. It still comes on around 220 degrees when the auxilary fan kicks in. I performed the tests that the manual shows:
- grounded the wire from the fan switch and the auxiliary fan came on but the main one didn't.
- jumped terminals at the relay and the main fan DID come on. So it's not the fan motor, or no power situation.
So I thought, bad relay. Put in new one....same thing.
I also replaced the switch (mainly because the insulation broke when I was taking off the connector) so I'm pretty sure that's OK as well.
Anybody have some thoughts what I can check? I'd hate to pay the dealer man, but I'm almost at that point. Thanks for any help.
OnDVirg-Is'nt the main fan supposed to come on at 220 degree? The aux. fan comes on when the A/C is on. I think this is how my '91 worked? I always mod the fans so they both come on at the same time using a thermal switch. It turns the fans on at 180 degrees. Check out Eckler's or mid America for this kit. You can also add a switch that will force the fans on when you are in traffic or inbetween auto x runs.

Oops. Mistyped above. The main fan IS NOT coming on @ 220 degrees, but the auxilary is. That's why I thought I was so clever replacing the relay. But still no fan.
