I want to put in a new opti, timing chain-TL-4, elect, water pump and while at it put in a cam. (Heads and ported intake later) What cam is best with CNC heads and LT-4 ported intake? Crane or hot cam? Can I just go with the cam now?
Well I for one will watch for the results on this. It seems that most of the hot cam users have 6spds. I wonder how it will work with a auto. I have a 3.54 gear in mine and a yank 3000 to install. Nathan has the hot cam and electric water pump and at one time that was all he had. He reported it did well with the stock heads. The only problem "for us comparing" is it was a 6 spd. I assume when you say hot cam you mean the kit with new springs and 1.6 rockers. You need the springs due to the extra lift, and that cam is designed for 1.6 rockers. One other option that you might want to consider on a cam is Comp. Cams has 4 new cams specific to the LT1. They are in the summit catalog in the whats new section. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!!
With your gears and TC, the Hot Cam would go good in your car. Like was stated, you need the 1.6s, and LT4 springs, but that would be it. With stock intake and heads, you should pick up about 20 to 40 rear wheel horse power. You will also have to have a chip burned. It will run too rich at low RPMs, and might die in stop and go traffic with an automatic on the stock chip.
It WOULD be worth it even without the heads and intake. You will see more improvement when you get those, but to think the cam wouldn't do much of anything in the stock motor is just dumb.
Crane makes good cams as well, but you need to make sure they haven't decreased the lobe radius so much that you can't use the stock lifters anymore, unless you were planning on buying new lifters as well.
