Default Engine died, backfired when attempting to start

Hi,

I am the original owner of my 1992 C4 LT-1 with 118K miles, and I have done most of the work on it. Last night it decided to die right when I was pulling it into my garage.

It began to idle very rough, would choke when pressing the accelerator, and after turning it off I smelled a lot of gas that appeared to be coming from the exhaust. When trying to restart, it had a violent backfire.

I had noticed for a few days that something felt like it was holding it back when I would accelerate hard.

I dumped the computer codes and there was nothing except an H74 for module 1 -- which I believe always comes up and should not be relevant.

Any advice on troubleshooting is greatly appreciated, because the only place to take it in my town is the chevy dealer and they are a rip off beyond belief.

Thanks

Check your fuel pressure, check for good spark, etc.

I'd also say to ohm check each injector--the resistance should be close to the same on each one. Since your injectors are batch fired (grounded via the ECM)--One bad injector can cause a very bad running problem. If the resistance is much higher or lower on one or two injectors that is likely your problem.

Thanks, I will give that a try. The fuel pump was replaced a year ago by the chevy dealer, so i am pretty sure that is not the problem. A bad injector "stuck open" would make sense because I am getting gas dumped in my exhaust. But will a resistance value indicate if it is stuck open, and wouldn't i at least get a computer code?

Backfires occur when there is spark with the intake valve open. This happens when the distributor gets out of time due to stretched or jumped tooth timing chain (if it has one) or a defective distributor. Your 92 has optispark so you can't use a timing light to see if the timing is off. At least pull the dist cap and see if it is wet or if there are carbon tracks and check the condition of the cap and rotor.
