Default TVC adjustment

Hello, I adjusted the tvc according to the fsm, but decided to check it with the pan off. It was actually pushing the valve in about 1/8 inch and at full throttle in was about 1/8 to 1/4 inch from fully seated. So i adjusted it so that at idle state it was just touching the piston and at full throttle it was fully seated. Now it shifts at three grand at 1/8 to 1/4 throttle, half throttle feels real good so does full throttle. It downshifts perfectly, anyone know why its shifting like this. I dont want to mess with the TV cable because I believe its set correctly. Thank You Mike

How did it shift when the tv cable was adjusted according to the fsm? Most people don't drop the pan to adjust the cable.

It was smoother but won't hold a gear, kinda quick to shift. It looked to me like the linkage assy. on the tv was tweaked, like maybe is wasn't adjusted right and tweaked it, of course i dont know what a new one looks like,,,I was told it could burn the trans up if the cable isnt adjusted properly. I have an after market pan on it (extra 2qt) with a drain plug so its not that big a deal to drop it.

Your right, sometimes if the shifts are short and stacked, it can be because the tv cable has too much slack. Can you find a midpoint between the two adjustments you have described?

I was thinking about doing that, but than it would be off the setting were it was just touching the pistion and fully seated at full throttle. Do you think it would hurt the Trans if I set it between the two?

As you know, normal adjustment is just to let it ratchet itself (assuming it works) out to full throttle. Give the spring tension, cable stretch etc etc, at that setting, I would expect it to have reached full travel in the tranny slightly before full throttle with the last little bit of throttle travel placing tension on the cable etc. In your case, if the above were true, you're too loose and need to shorten it a hair, which from your description of shifting, you need to shorten it a hair. Seems to add up!

When I bough mine, you have to let off the gas to get it to shift. Was worried about tranny issues, but noticed the TV was guitar tight at full and took the risk in buying the car. Now with the TV adjusted as per the FSM (ratchet was stuck on my car), shifts are ideal. At full throttle, the cable is pretty tight, but not limiting throttle travel.

So does that mine release the lock on the tv and pull it toward the ARS or push it toward the firewall? thanks Mike

If it's working right, push the release and allow it to retract towards the fire wall on its own. Then push the throttle full on at the body and the cable will ratchet out to where it needs to be.

On mine, the ratchet was sticky so not only would it not retract when you pushed the button, it took way too much force to ratchet it back out.. Cleaning and WD around the barrel..
