Base timing for my 89 is 6. That's the factory setting.
Didn't understand your slight response either.
Yes it is.
My point was that if another tech removes the distributor and does not know about the different base timing that was set, he might not set it the way it was set up originally
WTF?? Do you know what you are talking about? My tuner sets up plenty of performance Vette's. Many of which do TT's or autox. I have no complaints with my perfromance.
I can't help it if you don't understand what you are reading. I don't care who your tuner is or what he sets it up for. As to your having no complains, I care about it even less. Your opinion is meaningless. The dyno tells if it is maximized or not. If your butt dyno is that accurate, perhaps we could all skip the real dyno and have you evaluate the performance for the tuners.
If you have dispute what what I said, feel free to explain what your dispute is instead of making a broad statement that is highly expressive but totally lacking in content.
1990 Corvette, aftermarket chip, 160 thermo Bosch match flow injectors, otherwise stock. Primary use autocross, frequent 2nd gear redline, Fuel Chevron 92, Oil Mobil One. Pretty basic. Engine has 127K miles on it. Replacing the O2 sensors, and having the timing checked before this weekends Pro Solo at El Toro. Is there a safe (no risk of detonation or other bad things) timing advance that would add a little performance. I understand 4 degrees positive is max? don't know if that is true.
Thoughts are welcome.
You are fine to bump it a few.
Want the quick and dirty way to know if you should?
Go out with your timing light to a flat stretch of road with some way of marking points. Accelerate (lets say the speed limit is 70, which is a good number for 2nd gear auto-x'ing too I'd bet) from say 1000 RPMs in 2nd gear to the speed limit or some RPM where you decide to stop the timer.
Time this and repeat at least 3 times. The time should be pretty consistent. Pull over, bump timing 2 deg, repeat 3x+. Did the time drop?
Repeat with timing at 10*, did the time drop?
Without a dyno, this is the quick and easy way to test if it is worth it. Your car will be fine with 6-12 but I'd bet 10 will be tops for any improvement.

FYI, the car was dyno tuned, not butt dyno tuned. I stated that in my earlier post. They went through 3/4 tank of fuel to get there. And when I stated that I am satisfied with performance, I am due to results on the course, not from my ***, altough it does feel good.
This being said, grantar2, since you got me in this argument with the blond, why don't you test different base timings and let us know what you come up with. I think USAsOnlyWay is a good approach.

You were the one that started with the who's who as far as your tuner and how it feels. Just because John Lingenfelter tuned my car doesn't mean anything as who your tuner is. I made a simple statement that either you didn't understand or cannot. The point was simple. You can set the program in the chip around the base timing. Lets start with that and see if you can have a valid point.
You got yourself into any dispute. If you can't be civil and dispute something, feel free to ignore me.
