I have an 89 trip black, with Black '96' Gran Sport rims, car looks great, but I'd like to give it a bit more unique look. Is lowering it something that can be done at home, do I need special tools? Has anyone out there done it and have any pics?
To lower the rear end, you have to buy longer bolts for the rear leaf spring. For the front, you need some plastic (or other materiel) shims that you put in the front. Both can be bought from any corvette mail order company. ( http://www.ecklers.com , http://www.corvettecentral.com , http://www.madirect.com (Mid America Designs)). Fairly cheap to lower a vette. Not too difficult with jack, jackstands and some larger sized wrenches and sockets.
If you realy want to drop it get the front/rear kit. If you just want to fill the rear wheel wells better get the long bolt kit.
The front requires dropping the front spring, etc. The rear just changing stock bolts for the longer.
I dropped the rear about 1 1/8" in an hour with two jacks and simple tools. THough I had the front/rear lowering package from MAD, I liked the look so much that I haven't lowered the front and likely won't.
Mine's been lowered dramatically. My brother-in-law removed the entire front spring and shaved all the rubber off of it. It basically sucks up everything in it's path. :D
I bought the Sport Replacement springs from Vette Brakes. They lowered the car an inch or so. It isn't the cheap way, but with the stiffer springs, I scrape less now than I did before.
