Lost the pedal in the '89. Crawled under it, only to find the line that curves up to go into the ABS unit is rusted and leaking. In fact at least 3 are rusted, only one is leaking.
While in the ABS compartment, I notice the lines take a unique route up to the unit. They come off the unit, go a distance and then go up, across, down across and up again. This seems like a pain to do like that. Is there any reason I can't just run the line in a shorter, straighter fashion without the extra ups and downs?
Help...Thanks.
First, its HELL to even flare and shape this gauge brake line. Its not the mild steel/alloy thats on some cars. You can buy some straight sections but the shaping is tough. I've seen others regret getting into the project. Might be best to order the OEM pieces or buy them off a donor car and retain the shape.
There is a reason why its done as it is. Might not be obvious, but theres a reason.

The lines are designed to absorb and dampen the rapid pressure pulsations when the solenoids in the modulator valve are actuating to balance the braking and to avoid fatigue cracking.
Looked further....actually there is brake fluid inside the compartment where the ABS is. This could suggest that something is leaking in there and traveling down the line through the hole....not necessarily the line leaking.
Any ideas, too late now to check in the dark.
Thanks
