Default What does 'service ASR' typically mean?

Bought a '92 several weeks ago and this morning on the way to work I noticed the 'service ASR' light had come on. Can anybody tell me what this normally means? I also have an oil leak and will be taking it to my mechanic on Tuesday for that, but will a non-dealership mechanic be able to fix the ASR issue? thoughts/comments? thanks.

ASR = Acceleration Slip Regulation.

Also known as traction control. It uses several sensor inputs so the ABS and ECM can determine the amount of wheel spin correction needed. It can retard timing, apply rear brake thru the ABS system or even retard the throttle, depending on the severity of the unwanted spin.

Do you get an ABS light at the same time?

It could be as simple as low brake fluid in the master cylinder.

If the mechanic knows how to pull the stored ASR diagnostic fault codes, he should be able to repair the problem.. If not, the nearest dealer can.

Thanks for your response. I did not get an ABS light at the same time. I will be checking the brake fluid level. My mechanic has a fairly sophisticated diagnostic device, so hopefully it will reveal the problem. The other day I was getting my foot into it a little with the ASR both on and off, but there didn't seem to be a problem. In fact, when I hammered it with the ASR on, it modulated the throttle as it is designed to do. At this point I am more worried about the source of the oil leak near the front of the engine. Hopefully it will be something simple, but it could be the front main seal.

I got a "Service ASR" light when my Opti-spark crapped out. Performed an autopsy on it after replacing the dying MSD unit. MSD didn't clean the drilled holes where the rotor screws on the shaft. Machining oil ran out to the edges of the optical disk and into the photo cells blinding them. My tach started acting up first, dropping to Zero and then bouncing back up. Never quite figgured out how the opti ties in with the ASR through the computer, but after a new Opti distributor, all is well again. The tach reads steady and there is no ASR service light any more.

I have a 92 corvette and the asr and abs service lights come on after driving it for a short distance. I never noticed this before until I had new rear tires put on. I have checked the brake fluid and it is full. It has the suspension package on it also. Is there something that could have caused this when installing the rear tires? I have read the above forum but still lost ......... any advice would be greatly appreciated......

You have to be very careful not to damage the sensors or their connections in the rear hubs, seeing that you had the tires replaced the rear sensors and their cables would be the first place I would look.

Go to a Corvette shop these independents are not specialists Get a quote over the phone these shops know these cars. Example had one corvette shop tell me we do optis in a half and hour in and out yea right he was a C2 specialist . So listen and you will save a few dollars and get it done correctly!Also write down your mileage joy rides some times for coffee runs you do not want! Good Luck!

Thank you for the reply...Would this be something a person could check themselves?? I am not a mechanic as per say but do like to learn and fix all that I can ...... or would I be better off taking it to a GM dealer???
