I'm planning to remove the engine from my 93 primarily to install a new clutch & flywheel. Can you pull the engine & tranny out the top as a unit?
My car has 130K, runs good, and leaks a little oil (~1 qt between oil changes). I am planning to change the fnt & rear main seals and the plug wires. Are there othe PM things I should do while the engine is out?
dont have to remove the engine to change the flywheel/clutch. just pull the tranny out the bottom and support the back of the engine on a jack stand. iv never done the job, but seen it done enough times.do a search on clutch or flywheel removal
Although I've never done a C4, it looks to me like there should be plenty of room to pull both at once after the hood is gone. You might have to pull the radiator, but I doubt it. As long as you jack the car up a ways, you can angle it out. I'd definitely invest in a tilter. I love those things. A lot will depend on where the cherry picker ends up after you get the load on it. I know on cars with long noses (distance from front of engine to closest point cherry picker can be maneuvered to), it can be difficult to get the cherry picker in the right spot. Of course, if you are using a ceiling hoist or tripod, no problemo.
I'd replace the gaskets on the oil pan and valve covers. I'd check the starter out pretty thoroughly, especially the gear teeth. Flush the cooling channels in the block. Replace any icky looking freeze plugs. Check timing chain. Check the bearings on all the stuff with pulleys on the front of the engine and throwout bearing if you aren't replacing. U-joints should be checked. If they feel even a little grindy, I'd replace them now. Suspension bushings and shocks will be easier to replace now if they are getting worn. Let me think about it overnight and if I come up with anything, I'll post again tomorrow.
I probably will use the Happy Hooker to attach the EFI mainfold to the hoist. I don't think the Hooker is compatible with a leveler..ummmm. May need to rethink the unitized removal.
To me removing the hood is a bigger problem that removing either the engine or transmission. In short, I won't do it. Pull the engine from the side, drop trans out the bottom. Put them back the same way.

X2. I've had my motor out dozens of times. Never had the hood off. Drop the tranny from the bottom. Either do the seals with the motor in place or remove the motor from above. If removing both, as Muffin said, remove them separately.
If you do end up removing the 130k mile motor, might be worth the time and money to go through it. Rings and bearings would be a good thing if your going through the effort to pull it already.
If you do decide to just pull the tranny you can hit the rear main seal while your there and do the front at a later time.
After pulling on my engine and tranny for 2 hours realized take the tranny off is the easiest way to go. I don't think you can get both out the top together. I even had the heads and intake off at the time.
