Default Coolant Plug in Head

Does anyone know what size socket (assuming hex) for the coolant plug that goes in the side of the head (opposite of the sensor)?

The situation is this: We just dropped the motor in and put the coolant sensor on the wrong (drivers) side of the motor. Everything is assembled so swapping the heads from side to side is not an option. I need to move the coolant sensor to the passenger side of the engine. Problem is, every hex socket we try does not fit into the plug. We are stuck firing this thing up until we move the sensor to the correct side of the engine.

1990 Vette / L98 ZF6

Thanks in advance!

For a temporary fix, why not just extend the wire? Cut the wire about 8" from the connector and splice in longer wire that will reach the other side. Once you have the motor running, then you can work on swapping the sensor and plug.

Hex sockets come in both SAE and metric sizes: I'll bet the plug is metric. Also, is it a hex plug or a Torx plug??

I believe it is a 5/16" hex... or a 8mm hex should work..

Caution, there are suggestions to heat the area around the plug prior to plug removal to avoid stripping the threads....

Default 5/16

"Remove the 5/16″ square recessed pipe plug between spark plugs one and three on the drivers side of the engine. This can be very difficult. We suggest heating the area with a propane torch, then applying wax to the plug and surrounding area to help loosen the plug. To avoid cylinder head damage, do not use an acetylene torch. Before the plug begins rounding out, stop and reapply the heat and wax."

From Corvette Central installation notes.
