I removed the throttle body from my 95 today, I doubt it's ever been removed based on the filth of the engine bay. I did a quick feeler inside the intake and pulled out what I can only describe as post Valdez sludge. It was heavy (like cake) wet and black. I expected to see black carbon buildup but not wet cake too.
I've replaced the plugs, they were all dry with some mild carbon. The rear of the TB had heavy carbon deposit by they were dry. I'm a little concerned, I don't know if I should just pull the intake manifold or wait until the fall like I had planned? (140K on the car).
This is an unmodified cruiser, however I don't know much about it's past.
carb cleaner will clean the throrlebody right up,do the coolant bypass at this point while you have it off,no need to buy anything just bypass the throtlebody.no hp gain just makes it eay next time you want to pull it,well maybe 2 hp but you will never know
The gunk is pretty normal given the mileage of your car and the fact that the throttlebody probably hasn't ever been off. The pcv dumps right behind the throllebody so all that crap deposit's in that area. Clean it off with carb cleaner or throttlebody cleaner and button things up. You should be good to go.
