I had this problem a few years ago, ended up being the ignition switch, I also changed the ignition lock as well since I they key was being difficult to remove from the column ( that fixed the problem there as well ). Problem came up again. Car starts fine. Everything works as it should when the key is in each postion, with the following exception :
In the off and acc position, not only does the car keep running, but the dash stays lit up as well.
I've tried three different switches ( old one, two new ones , and it does the exact same thing with each. I've checked each switch being in the proper position when putting it in, same thing. I even tried putting it in the wrong position, but cannot getting any result other than car continuing to run, and dash staying lit up. I even replaced the ignition lock again, no change in results. Suggestions? Car is an auto.
Yes, other than the car continuing to run, everything else acts just as it should. The transmission locks when it's off, radio goes off properly, antenna goes down, etc.
M.A.D. enterprises (not Mid America Designs) has a kit to eliminate this. it is a sneak circuit through your alternator.
THey put a diode in the alternator light circuit I think, and it stops powering the ignition through the alternator. Your 84 has the early style alternator, and those sometimes exhibit this fault.
I think it's MADelectrical.com

Of course, the run-on may be due to a defective regulator in the alternator, or a wiring error in the charging circuit. The diode would be a cheap way to try and localize the problem.
Good luck, and be sure to let us know what works!
