Default Starter or something else on 85?

I recently (last week) had my transmission rebuilt and a new flywheel installed (flywheel was really not needed, but that's another story). Accurate Transmission here in Durham, NC did the work. (Stay away from them, please). Since getting the car back, there has been an intermittent issue with the starter dragging. Last evening the car failed to start and I had it towed home. When I tap the starter with a wrench or something, the car will start. It may start a few more times and then nothing. Tap the starter again and it will start. I am working today and will not be able to do anymore searching but does this sound like a bad starter or maybe some wire that has not been tightened properly. Obviously I will look into this possibility before doing any removals, etc. Any ideas of what I might need to look for?

When tapping/smacking a starter causes it to engage that's a sign the starter is bad. As you said it would be a good idea to check connections at the starter solenoid since a shop was just there, but IMO sounds like the starter itself.

If your tranny guy pulled the starter, there might be loose connections, a dirty solenoid wet with oil , or they may have screwed with the shims. To do these starters right, they have shims installed for proper fitment.

Disconnect the battery and check the starter wires. If the starter worked ok before, there is a good chance a wire might be loose. If the starter was not shimmed correctly, the starter gear would still push out of the starter housing but would not mesh properly with the flywheel gear.

Problem solved. It was the starter. Thanks for the replies.
