Default serpentine belt conversion

With some searching, I found this popular thread:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-t...te-pulley.html

I realize through my search that this topic has been discussed alot. Still I want to ask a question about the water pump compatibility that was discussed in several posts....long SBC wp v short Vette wp

Can you use a short vette pump ('84-'92) on a SBC w/ standard serpentine belt setup? Both pumps rotate the same way (reverse). The SBC pump is longer but the pulley is deeper. So to ask another way, Does the serp belt ride the same distance from the engine block for both long and short pump? If not, what is the difference.?

Thank you all for your time.

**EDIT** There is 4 3/4" between block face at water pump and serp belt on my 350 SBC

Actually, if someone with the normal short reverse rotation (stock) water pump could measure the clear distance between the belt and the waterpump-block interface, that would be all I need.

thanks again,
