Default poor mans bottom end

I rolled new rods and mains in today and noticed that I did something that may help someone. I didnt wait till I got knocking, rattling, or any of those other nasty noises. As soon as the oil pressure dropped bout ten lbs and stayed there, and fresh oil and a filter didnt improve anything , I parked it and rolled them in. if you wait till you get the noises you might get lucky, if you do it based on oil pressure you almost always will. Also gave me an excuse to upgrade to a canton pan , high volume oil pump, ministarter, steel sleeved pined pump shaft, etc...etc...after all if you're going to do that much work, may as well upgrade. the adventure continues. hope this helps, bob

That is Cool Bob.

Old school thinking & maintenance & repair practices still work great today.

I agree; any high mileage small block is going to gain life from having the lower end refreshed. Plus, if you have a manual, the thrust bearing surfaces get renewed. Also, it offers an opportunity to replace an old sloppy timing chain...and then there's the water pump...well, I don't have to tell you: the list goes on
