Default Tire size

I was wondering if there is any reason why 225/50/16 should not be used the 255/50/16 is so hard to find?

The 255/50/16 is a taller and wider tire. If you put a 225/50/16 the speedo will read faster than you are actually going, your fuel mileage will decrease, your handling will decrease and last but not least the BA look of the vette will be lost. If you go to http://www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/vis...ize-calculator you can try different size tires and see what is close to your OE tire size. Hope this helps

How will a 275/40/17 tires affect the speedo, fuel mileage and handling?

Looks like the factory tire on your car is a 245/50ZR16 so the 275/40ZR17 is the same basic Diameter (204.64 mm vs 204.77mm) Speedo and fuel mileage should not be affected and handling should improve. That being said, a bad 275 will not out handle a great 245 tire so make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Also watch for fender and wheel well inner wall clearance, it should be fine but I don't have an '87 so not sure. Anybody else try this combo.

Oh ok thanks. I have brand new tires on and the wheel well clearance is good as well.

Hi guys.

I didn't want to open a new thread so I'm gonna ask here.
My rear tires on my 95 are only good for one thing and it's not driving so gone they're deflating and no thread.

Now since I'd at least like to move the car from one part of the garage to the other without having to re inflate them every day.

Now I'm looking for tires but the ones I've got on aren't to be found or are too expensive at this moment. So in staid of 285 40 R17 is there any other tire I can get onto the rim? I know that handling and other stuff is affected but I'd just like to be able to move the car.

I probably can't fit the same size that's at the front 255 45 R17 right?

Are the rims the same width (as I read 9")?

Thanks for the replay

Best regards and bye

You can use 275 40 17 on the rear. They are cheaper and easier to find than the 285, and the difference in diameter is not very significant. The rear rim is 9.5" I think, which will accommodate the 275 OK.

Thank you very much. That's what I thought and I think that I've found 275 tires.

Thanks again and bye

Last but not least? What about increasing TQ? Usually, smaller tires will increase torque!

Oops, I forgot torque, maybe I should include changing the rpm at the traps if you're geared wrong, oh crap, it just keeps going

torque is determined by tire size? No, the engine determines torque. If you put a smaller tire on, it just gets overwelmed. Your engine can not develope more power from a tire.

Hey Greg, Isn't that only when you have the white lettering on the outside ?

Width should be 8.5" front, 9,5" rear.

Agreed. My factory tire size was 275/40/17 on 9.5" rims. They will fit perfectly.
