Default 1987 scanner commendations

I need something to scan codes and do maintenance.
What is good? Money is an issue. Is there something more
GeneRic which is good? I may want to use it on
Other cars.

@Aaedwolf-That was very helpful... Thought of that all by yourself did you?... I guess that means you have no idea or have never used code scanning device.

I think he's saying that you can get most of the info you need from an 87 and earlier with the use of a paper clip, 88 and later is where the scan tool becomes worth having, hope this helps.

Nah the paperclip works on '88 too. Till OBD 2, though I think there was a way for it to work for that as well.

Who wants to sit and miscount flashes in the 21 century? What a P I T A. EVERYTHING on this car is difficult. From changing the tail lamps accessing the computer. My dad taught me the proper application of the right tools will make any job easier. What happened to all the good straight answers I use to get on these threads?...

So you can't spell, can't count, and whine a lot, then get sarcastic when a solution is given that is best for "money is an issue".

There is nothing at all wrong with using a paper clip to read the flashes on the SES light. The other thing you will need to service the car is the Factory Service Manual or FSM. Those books have detailed instructions for both diagnosis and repair for any of the codes that the ECM can display.

The flashing light process when using the paper clip will provide all of the codes stored in the ECM. Most OBD1 readers won't do much more than display the same error codes, just in a viewable form.

There are high-dollar scan tools you can find like a GM Tech-1 or a Snap-On scan tool that will provide more information, but expect to pay hundreds of dollars for them when you can find them.

@Aardwolf if you knew what sarcastic means you'd realise you are that. You made 4 comments and I learned nothing from any of them. From this I can safely conclude you have nothing to offer anyone at anytime. I asked a simple question, with specification for a SCANNER. I mean I appreciate humor and sarcasim but a little helpful advise mixed in would be nice. Thats what forums like this are for. So Play nice FartWolf (see, now thats humor).

Your right I need a FSM. Thanks for that. I tried clips to get the codes when my stall out problem first occurred - I wasn't getting anywhere. Now as I troubleshoot this problem I want to be sure I am not misreading codes to compound the issue. Something clear and direct will facilitate diagnosis more expeditiously.
Any online sources for a FSM. I wonder...

With the above qualities he should be perfect on this forum..... There's my sarcasm , now I can hopefully give something useful... If you want to be able to scan all cars you need a scanner that can read obd 1 and obd 2.. I have a Autoexray 6000 scanner and can read both with a full read out of "freeze frame" and can also read continuous live info while the car is running.. A scanner like this along with a FSM should make it easy to identify and resolve most engine issues.. The Autoexray 6000 is around $350.00 but you can pick this scanner and also the model 5000 up used on ebay for much less.I have seen the model 5000 go for as little as $100.00.. The model 5000 is just the older model but works the same...WW

Here are a couple FSMs I found on ebay...WW

You can download the software that you need for your notebook computer free on the Internet (TunerPro or WINALDL). If you go this route, you will need to add a USB cable to connect your PC to your under-dash ALDL connector. The software is free and the cable is about $65. Check it out.

I have that equipment and it's still easier to check codes real quick with a paperclip. BTW moates.net sells that equipment or there are other places. The scan and tune section right next door has all the info. Like this sticky topic:

All of these are really good thank you. I will pickup something this by saturday after further investigation. I have also picked up a ICM - I think this was the cause of my initial stall out problem. I learnd that on this news group as well. I wasted big money on a local well known "Doctor" and they fixed nothing. You guys are more knowledgable and helpful. yes even Fart... - I mean Aardwolf
