Which is the better muffler to put on a 87 vette, the 40 series or the 50 series. I'm looking at putting a 2 1/2 Y pipe after the cat. Right now I got stock Y with monza tubes. I'm hoping the flowmaster will give me more power over the monza's.
I don't know the difference between the 40 and 50 series, but I do know that Flowmaster makes single, dual and triple chamber mufflers. The more chambers the quieter.
I wouldn't expect a great gain in performance from any system.
I don't know the difference between the 40 and 50 series,
.
The 50 is 3 chamber, the 40 is 2 chamber. I have the 3 chamber. It's tame. the 2 chambers 40 ones sound real deep and powerful. I had one of those on a 91 Z28. It sounded killer.
The models Flow markets "for" our Corvettes is 3 chamber. WARNING FM is one of the more restrictive "Hi-Perf" mufflers out there. It has internal baffles and turns in it. If you want real flow, go with a "straight-thru" design. One example is the Magnaflows along with the ones mentioned above(Borla and PE). Lingenfelter recommends Borla for some reason(I'll have to re-read his book).
Hmm, my Corsas are pretty much a straight thru design, I should've took pics before I put them on.
I still feel not much gain comes from just an exhaust.
I have the 40's with a gutted cat on my 85. At idle and slow acceleration they are not very load they just have a deep growl to them. Once you go WOT everybody within about half a mile knows it. They are pretty load but I love it. Very good sound, but then what do I know about sound I love the way a mustang with an exhaust system sounds like. :bb But, that is all I like about mustangs though.
I have 3" 2 chambers on my 94 and with the new TPIS Headers, no cats, It sounds awesome!!! I used a ton of gas the first day I got my exhaust hooked back up! I use to have a bad interior resenence at about 2100 rpm before the headers w/ punched out cats. Now that is gone! But in the upper RPMS those flowmasters really sing! I love it! Maybe I'll go drive it now!
Ok here it is. I went ahead and had my local shop redo my exhaust. They built a new 2 1/2 Y pipe and a set of 2 1/2 flowmasters with 3 inch twin tips on each. Cost me 420.00 total. I went too drive it to see what she will do. For one the tone was not as loud as my monza's but nice. Performance was better than the other exhaust I had. Doing about 20 mph I grabbed Low and stood on it, hit Second and the car slid sideways and then grabbed Drive and she chirpped with a little slide. Now I have a high flow cat with no pre cats on the car, if I was to completely remove the cat would I get a little more hp, or would I start losing some bottomend torque?
