Anyone have an idea of approx. what the fair cost would be to bring my new engine to someone and have them swap it out. Trying to plan ahead to budget expenses.
Ironic you ask this, I just was getting bids on this yesterday. 29 hours estimated to pull motor and install new shortblock. Total with gaskets, labor, tax, etc, approx $5000, just shy of that.
Mind you, I didnt give them a blank check and say do it, either... I am not any motor mechanic by any means and will be the first to admit it, also I assume a good L98 motor isnt cheap. But, that being said, $5000 seemed out of reach and out of line...
If you've got another motor to put in, it shouldn't be more than $500 for a basic swap. No special tuning involved or included, just unbolt old, bolt up new. You can pay a shop a whole lot more, it really depends on what you're looking for. I've been looking at my 86, and I will probably remove the hood, but I think it could probably be done without even doing that if you don't pull the trans too.
GM shop rate is about $75 hour, warranty rate from Leggits, Autozone, Advance pays $20-$30 hour. Just FYI
