I have a stock 95 LT1. I have thought about adding roller rockers with out changing the original heads and cam. I would also like to keep the same valve covers. Will I get any performance benifits from this change, or is it not worth while without a head and cam change? If roller rockers will work what kind can you recomend.
I have also toyed with the idea of having the original heads ported and polished, or is there a better and more inexpensive after market choice?
We installed a set of Crane Gold 1.6 self-aligning on a friend of mine's 95 Trans Am... No other mods were performed (other than checking piston to valve clearance and retainer to guide clearance). He picked up about 18 rwhp with just this swap but it was all in the upper realm of the rpm band. I didn't see any gains down low and honestly it doesn't feel all that different to me up high either. But, its his car and he swears he feels the difference!!

Id think about the hotcam kit myself, but you dont have to change the cam. But otherwise i would get the Cranes 1.6 RR. Most RR will give at least 15hp. Your heads are pretty good, and ported theyll flow alot of air. The only better choice may be AFR's but theyre expensive.
I've never had my car on a dyno, but with the motor stock it ran a best of 12.48 @ 108 mph..
All I did was install GM 1.6 RR , & it ran 12.28 @ 110 mph I picked up 2 full tenths.. I also have a weather station, & the weather was almost EXACTLY the same for both runs,
I can't feel any difference at low RPM, but it does pull harder over 4500.. I say its well worth doing..
From what I hear the Crane Gold & the OEM GM 1.6 are the same, I'd go with the best price..
YES you do have to change the valve springs ( I was told to prevent coil bind) So all I did was replace the RR & springs... I had to grind off the drip tabs on the valve covers, but other than that it was no prob.
Try calling Dal.. he usually has the best GM prices..

Get a set of 1.7 rollers ( yes...you can buy them for the SBC ) and put in some stiffer springs. Should give between 20-30 HP.
This is from Charles Richard at Camcraft:
We have roller rockers for SBC in 1.5, 1.55, 1.6, 1.65, & 1.7 ratios. They are all 7/16 stud but we can get any of them in 3/8. Cost for most is from $195.00 to $225.00 depending on ratio. Mixed ratio sets are available at no extra charge.
1.7's will almost certainly have a coil bind problem... We had no coil bind or clearance issues in any of the 1.6's we've installed but we always check. At the same time you're checking for coil bind it is a good idea to pull one of the springs to installed height and check what the rate is... Too light and you'll float the valves with the increased lift given by the new ratio rockers. The Crane Gold Series self-aligning rockers and the GMPP LT4 "HotCam" rockers are the exact same. The only exception are those factory installed on LT4 cars which aren't adjustable. You definitely want to use the self-aligning rockers in this instance, otherwise you'll have to install guideplates (real ones, not the ones GM uses) and hardened pushrods.

The stock spring are at near bind when you switch from 1.5 to 1.6 rockers (within 0.10"). You will float the valves for sure. Good springs can be had for ~$30 (the LT4 springs). It makes no sense to drop ~$300 for rockers and go cheap on the springs, esp if you like to run your motor to the redline.
