I noticed this about a week ago..and its getting louder, when i slow down the rear end is whining, it sounds like a stick car gearing down. Rpms dont affect the noise, neither do brakes. WHen i had my car getting its tires balanced last week the mechanic said i needed new wheel bearings, but the mechanics at the shop i went to are idiots, they know nothing about corvettes.
It was suggested to me that i needed gear oil, so i just filled up the diff with gl5, it took almost a litre. The whine is still there, didnt seem to make much difference, will it take a while to make a difference? or is there already damage. It doesnt chatter at all.
The 84 had several recalls for the rear.... http://www.c4vettes.com/84sb.htm You may want to change the fluid and don't forget the limited-slip additive
thanks for the link jon, you seem to be the goto guy for 84 questions. I was considering changing the fluid last week since i have 140k miles on it and its probably never been changed. I'll try to get it done later this week.
