Are there multiple models of the ZF used from 89-96? I have read something about a "black tag" model used till 93 but cannot verify anything on it. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: A ZF model question... (T1Kilr)
There are quite a few different types.
89-91 models had gears that were cut on a slightly different angle to later models (not straight cut) which makes them a little noisier and slightly stronger.
ZR1 gearboxes have a different input shaft because of the different motor.
Not sure of what significance a "black tag" car has, my guess is that it denotes one of the early boxes described above. I'm sure someone else can verify.
'95 and '96 models don't have a reverse lockout ring around the shifter. They have a stronger spring that makes it harder to "accidentally" push it over far enough to go into reverse.
89-93 which were the "Black Tag" models I believe are rated at 450 lb/ft of torque... 94-96 are rated at 400 lb/ft. 95-96 do not have reverse lockout ring as stated above. They're ALL NOISY, though!!

Jeb has the same info I have. I will add that the final gear ratio is different as well in some models. My '92 tranny had a .50 6th gear, and my '94 tranny had a .49 6th gear. Nothing substantial by any means, but that is what was specified on the cases.
I also believe that the 'black tag' models are the only ones that have aftermarket gears being made for them to give you a different 5th and 6th gear ratio.
