Default 1991 L98 performance options?

I have done a little research on the motor and haven't found too much that's promising to get more horsepower out of this motor like it's extremely limited on what it can do. I may be looking at the wrong things but any help you guys could give me would be great. I'd like to try and get about 400 at the wheels. Thanks in advance.

You're probably not going to get 400 hp to the wheels using the tuned port intake. It's the biggest limiting factor on the l98. It's great for making torque, but not horsepower. I suggest you start there, along with better heads, cam, and headers.

400 HP at the wheels is a forklift job. It can be done only with MUCHO DINERO!

It is still a Gen 1 SBC, it can we done. You need to ditch the TPI setup and run a mini-ram or something similar. 400 wheelhorse is possible but a 383 might be necessary. Form there it is just heads, cam, headers, etc...

There's been a couple of 350's with AFRs that hit 400rwhp. Barely.

I agree it'll take intake, heads, cam, and headers/exhaust to get the job done. If the motor's not fairly new, add that to the list.

So...Anywhere from 4k on up -- depending on who does the work and what you buy. Plan on more if you do the shortblock. If you do, convert to a 383/396 for better zero-to-redline performance.

BTW...There are TONS of threads on this subject!!!!

We'll need to know your budget, what you can do yourself, what youre not willing to do to the engine to point you somewhere.

It'll require ditching the TPI if you want it naturally aspirated. SR, HSR, or MR are your options there.
