No Start for 87
Will not start even with jumper cables. Makes no solenoid noise or clicking. I have a hum at the alternator with key turned on. Battery appears to be fine, however, I had the car jumped a week ago and the battery doesnt appear to retain a charge. Does anyone know if the alternator can present a no start situation?

Battery volts must not fall below 9.0 volts when cranking or the battery is discharged or at the end of its life. You might try charging the battery up , then try cranking while measuring the battery voltage. If the battery is dead , jumper cables will not supply cranking current.

Check the neutral sfaety switch. If the car has a manual trans it is on the clutch pedal. If it has gone bad the starter won't get power. If it is an automatic try the car in neutral and see if it will start. Could be the VATS system, clean your key or try a different key.
Start with testing your battery and be sure it is good. 12 volts doesn't mean it is good.
