Have '89 with problems. No power to A/C cluster, horn. Everything else seems to work OK, except volts show only 11 volts. Changed fuses - no apparent fix when suddenly, A/C cluster was lit, A/C worked, horn worked, volts shot up to 14 - looking good. Then I could smell insulation burning, but couldn't find the source. Then, no more A/C cluster, horn, or 14 volts. Have the Tools.com Service manual on CD but can't seem to track this problem down. What kind of connection affects only the horn, A/C cluster, and the voltage? A/C fuse is good. Fusible link?
Check the 15 amp theft fuse with an ohmeter (they see better than you), this powers the horn relay. The a/c controller gets power from one ign sw contact (there are 4 switch contacts in the ign sw) as does the engine coolant fan and aux fan and the power window circuit breaker. See if the windows work when the horn and a/c don't work, then the spade lug that connects to the ign switch blade is suspect and can cause hot wire smell and a small wisp of smoke out the steering column. Replace the spade lug. The only thing common to the horn and a/c circuit is a large splice (S203 in my 87) in the wiring harness and there are two separate wires going to the ign sw and horn relay from this splice. Moderate long shot, but this splice may be at fault and it is inside the vehicle and could cause the hot wire odor.
JFB, checked and windows do indeed work - as does everything else (signals, etc) that might have been on same main power circuit as those that don't work. Will try to run down the possible spade problem. Any idea of best way to access this? Love my Corvette. but there sure isn't much room to work!
As you can see from my picture, last year a tree fell on the car, and I am just now getting Humpty Dumpty back together again. Mosty just glass damaged but water did get into the car - thus my random electrical problems. Thanks for the help thusfar.
