I was getting 21~22 on the highway, then I installed a new tranny w/ a 2400 RPM converter. Now I'm getting 19. Are these values normal for an 86? Is there something wrong? should, (could) I be getting closer to 30 MPG? What can I do to improve gas mileage?
Mileage shouldn't change on the highway because of an upgraded stall. It will, however, change around the city. The converter will be locked at highway speeds.
Since you say it's a completely new tranny, that is probably the reason for the difference. However, I would have thought it would go up not down.
I've never gotten better than 18.5 on the highway in my 86. I have a stock, iron head, automatic, 3.07 rearend. But I've always felt if you are getting better than 20 MPG in a corvette you should be driving a minivan!!!
Ok, I take it that 19 is normal then. Im not too worried about city mileage. Just got back from the bay area last weekend, and got 19 av. for 1000 miles. I used to get high 21. Then i've been sortof hearing these claims of almost 30 MPG? Am I way off here? Im not clear on what MPG GM claimed off the show room floor in 86. Not sure the converter has anything to do with it or not. Could just need an O2 sensor? Im going to the Winston Cup race this weekend in Fontana and will be putting on another 2K miles. With gas prices the way they are (esp on the interstate) every highway MPG I can get can makes a difference :) 2K mi at 20 mpg means 100 gals. at 30 I'd use 66, saving 33 gals, about 60 dollars, which i could use to pay for them 7 dollar beers they sell there haha
Anyway, I was just curious what highway MPG I should consider as normal.

(I get about 270 miles per 15 gallons with iron heads and 3.07 rear on a 700r4. )
That's about 18 MPG.
Well, driving habits are probably the greatest factor. I just can't resist punching it when I have the chance. Most of my driving is around dallas, which gives a mixture of both highway and city. I usually register 16.5 on my average milage indicator over several thousand miles.
