I have a 1992 Corvette. My College Graduation present to myself! (not bad huh) It currently has 134k miles. I've been struggling with what I believe to be an over heating problem but that’s going to be a new thread. I am also having a problem with the automatic transmission. When it’s cold it starts and runs and shifts through the gears relatively smoothly. When it gets hot it stays in first gear. I have tried to shift it from first to second manually but it just stays in first. My guess is Torque converter. Am I correct? I’m a back yard mechanic and have done most of the work on my cars. I replaced a 700R4 before in my old suburban but that was when I was 15 and my father helped me hand in hand with it. Should I tackle this job myself or should I limp it to a mechanic or transmission place? I don’t have much money to spend on it. The wife wants a house not a fun Saturday night car. I may be looking for a new wife... what are my options? Should I have the tranny rebuilt when it’s out?
Well I can't say for sure but it sounds an overheating problem, since you have the same problem with the engine it might be your radiator (that cools both) is obstructed or something.
I had my 700r4 rebuild for 1200 out the door, just to give you an idea of what it should cost. I got quotes for up to 2200 bucks, so don't take anything over that.
it has a new radiator, thremostat, temp sensor, waterpump, and the system flushed about ten times to make sure it was good and clean. I will be adding a transmission cooler when I get it fixed. $1200 isnt bad. Was that with a drop the car off and pick it up running or did you bring the transmission to someone for 1200?
just dropped it off and picked it up 3 days later. If you want to maybe get some leverage on a place, call Dave's Transmission in Columbia SC and they will tell you the same price over the phone so you know if someone is BSing. This was done in '09. He even put in high performance parts too.
Did you check your DTR codes. You may be getting a DTR code 758. This would mean you have a problem with one of your shift solenoids, and when this occures, the ECM locks the transmission into a limp mode, which actually leaves it in 3rd gear, if I remember correctly.
Best for rebuilt ... in SK speed in Long Island NY..
the best of the best I found after researching this a few years back for a friend, was SK speed in Long Island... they ship all over.... I'm not associated in any way with them.... but people use their stuff for the track etc.... So if its good for those monsters it should last big time for the stock engines.. Good Luck... they were also very helpfully in diagnosing problems over the phone.. great guidance..
WTF? LoL You might want to change your thread topic or re-word it
Pull any codes present and go from there! Do you have a FSM? Your clutch bands in your "tranny" might be slipping or sticking.

This is not the torque converter. It is most likely the front pump has more than the usual wear, as it works ok when cold (when the oil is thicker) and the volume goes down when it starts to thin out from the heat, and you lose the other gears. Does reverse have a delay or any slippage when it is warm? Put a pressure guage on it and see what readings you get. It is possible it has a filter problem (collapsing on itself). Drop the pan and see what is on the bottom of the pan away from the pan magnet. Change the filter to a oem type. Look for SPX, filtran, Sealed Power, or microfelt. It will be stamped on the filter. There are some bad chinese "no name" filters out there. It might take two or three part stores to locate one, or go to a transmission shop if you have too. Call and have them pull the filter to see what is stamped on it.
