Measure the ac voltage on the white wire from the distributor that goes to the tachometer during cranking. It should measure some significant voltage depending on your ac voltmeter characteristics. No voltage tells you that the spark module isn't pulsing the primary of the spark coil and this could be because of a defective pickup coil in the distributor, a defective spark module, or a defective spark coil. Call and find a parts place that can test the coil and the spark module. Use your ohmeter to measure the pickup coil in your distributor.
86 Vette cranks but won't start. No spark but fuel pump clicking.
Ign. coil ohm test OK. Could it be the coil pickup? How do you test it?
It could be. You can test the pickup coil yourself with a multi-meter by performing a simple ohm test shown below. I had mine go dead before. Engine just died on the freeway never to restart on it's own. It can be tested without removing the distributor from the car. Just remove the cap and rotor to gain access to it.
It could also be the ignition module that's in there also. There is no real way for you to test the igintion module though. Autozone can test those for free with a computerized machine. Remove it and take it to Autozone for testing if the pickup coil test checks out ok.
