Default stalling 1992

i have a 1992 coupe
the opti is an msd changed approx 5 years ago (along with water pump)
the ignition coil module and coil were also changed then (all less than 10k km ago)
now the car stalls intermittently; no real tell tale, it just stops like it was turned off; when it happens it will restart, sometimes takes a few minutes. other times the car runs fine even when hot

now this time the tach is not going crazy when it fails (like it did when the opti has gone)
i have changed the plugs to iridium
car has original fuel pump, could it be an intermittent fuel pump failure??
no codes as of yet
all answers appreciated

There is a bundle of wires from the opti to a connector on the passenger side of the intake. You will need to check it for bad connectors at both ends.

Check for codes and post what you get

on the 1992 the connector was not the same as other years; had to solder the wires from the msd opti; the soldered connection seems ok
there is no service engine soon light; will there still be codes??
also when it runs it seems to run great and then just dies as if turned off
would a fuel pump do this?

OK, you still need to check the connector at the intake. The old connector could have "loosened" up. Check the connector on the ICM.

My 92 would eat ICM's after a few months, you could try a new ICM just for S&G

Have you replaced the fuel filter? checked pressure at the rail when it dies?

If you get a ICM go to autozone their warrented for life. If I even have a little doubt about my ICM I just go get a free replacement

Have same year car, had similar problem.

My MSD opti had an internal fault develop that caused the distributor rotor to contact an internal plastic backing plate. This eventually filled the distributor with plastic dust that effected the optical side of the distributor. This is a common fault on early build MSD optis. The car never set a diagnostic code.

One thing you can try

A spark plug test light connected to the coil will allow you to see if the coil is firing while cranking. If that works then connect the light to one (or several) of the spark plugs, start cranking and see if the energy is getting through the opti to the spark plugs.
