i recently put a 383 in my 88 vette and its running a little to hot for me is it better to run a cooler thermistate or take my old 195 and punch the center out of it
A lower temperature thermostat won't do anything to the coolant temperature because it too will be wide open just like your 195 stat. You don't mention what temperature your coolant runs now so we can't tell if your temps are correct or not. Turning the fan on earlier also won't do anything if you are under way.
i have an electric fan i turn on as soon as the car reaches 160 and its anywere from 200 to 210 i think im going to get a performance radiator maybe a griffin

First try cleaning out the fins on your radiator, C4's suck up all kinds of debris and the bottom of the radiator gets clogged. Some pictures were posted of clogged radiators awhile back.

Turning a fan on at 160 with a 195 stat is not going to do a thing. with a 195 stat your temps are right on.

Good advice! also, replacing the radiator with a hi flow 2 or 3 row will really help a lot. One thing that really worked for me besides the 3 row radiator (I have a 383 too) was to install an oil cooler, since I run it at the drags frequently. I now run at 188 to 204 in Miami's 90 plus degree heat with a 180 degree thermostat. I use a 50-50 mix of water/antifreeze and a bottle "water-wetter" in my radiator.
Missing or damaged air baffles (up front) or the shroud that directs the air flow to your radiator will also cause overheating if they are damaged or missing.
My next install will be to add a transmission cooler which should also aid in keeping the temperatures at a reasonable level, and protect my trans as well.
thanks i have a 7 quart oil pan and a tranny cooler that does not use the radiator at all. question what eta,s are you running the quarter mile in?and are you running street tires? im taking mine to the track real soon we just put the motor in last week and even though we brokr the cam in i wanna give it a couple of weeks to break itself in. my 383 dynoed at 477 horses and 486 lbs of torque i have a dana 44 rear end with 373 gears and a 3200 9 inch stall converter my only downfall is the 700r tranny although ive had a shiftkit and some other work done i would love to be able to use a turbo 350! i was just wondering what i might be able to turn i have an idea but lol
