Default Head Milling

How much metal can be taken off a set of 113 heads before it would cause problems with gaskets and block alignment????

..... The surface hardening on factory aluminum cylinder heads is at most .020 deep ... my machinist did not want to take off more than .013 for that reason ...

They are not surface hardened they are heat treated all the way through. What happens during use especially if overheated they get softened and then it is very hard to get a good surface finish when milling them. It does not take much to screw up the alignment of the intake gaskets when milling heads. 0.020 is probably a sensible limit.
