A couple of things... 245* on the digital is getting up near the be careful range. From your question I can see you misunderstand how a car thermostat works. You fans should come on when the AC is on or when the digital readout reaches @228*. All your thermostat can do is open up full coolant flow at around the stated temperature. It sounds like you have a fan issue and you need to find out why it's not working properly.

Thank u for the reply. what i ment on the thermostat was if it opens @195 and temp of engine rises to 245 fans come on both. when i call for a/c they come on. is there a sensor and where would it be ? im pretty mechanically inclined thats why i wasnt sure if the high temp was normal on these cars. when fans come on temp drops to apx. 200 degrees. any help would be appriciated. thanks in advance.

The fan on/off instructions are in the ECM. There is a temperature sensor that feeds your readout(s). I am not sure exactly where it is in a 1992 car.

Higher temp than what your probably used to seeing is normal for these cars.
But as mentioned, 245 on the digital display is a little high.

If your cooling system is in good shape, you shouldn't ever see temps over about 230.

Normal temps (using digital display):
Moving at any speed above 30mph = 195°F - 200°F
Sitting still and idling for any length of time = 215°F - 230°F

you have 2 temp sensors on the car one that the ecm reads to make the car function and another that is used for tha temp gauge. If you have someone hook a scan tool to your car this will give you a good idel whitch one is reading wrong. you could be reading 245 on your gauge and infact your actual temp is 228.

On my 1989 the temp sensor is on the passenger side beneath plug #6.
Yours may be in the same place.

When you think your temp is at 245 by the analog gauge - hit the gauges button until the water temp is displayed. This will show you the temp that your ECM uses to control the fans. If the fans don't come on when 228 is displayed on the digital read out you have an issue.
The temp sensor on the waterpump is used by the ECM and digital readout.
There is a temp sensor in the passenger head that drives the analog gauge. The analog gauge will be DEEP into the crosshatch and your digital might read 230!

FYI: All LT1's came from the factory with 180* thermostats.

X2

245* at the digital is high!

analog should read 5-15* higher then the digital, these figures refer to systems without leaks, clean, functioning properly, and no leaking head gaskets.
