going to upgrade the exhaust soon and heard from a few members that i should get a precat Ypipe along with a cat-back system. i dont need the pre-cats, and kinda dont want the factory looking one with the kinky looking bends. does anyone make a mandrel bent one that bolts up to the stock manifolds? any track/dyno gains from this mod? thanks in advance
I don't know about the y pipe but why would you want a precat pipe? my 89 roadster has gutted precats and passes emissions easly, it seems the precats are another obstruction in the exhaust system. :jester :jester :jester :jester :jester
I got a 2 1/2" SS front Y from MAD and had to return it (some guys here have had success with them however) due to bent tubing.
I then went to Mufflex in Trenton, NJ (link on my site) and had them custom bend/weld a 2 1/2" SS front Y, install the Random Tech cat and "alter" my TPIS custom FlowMaster cat-back. It took them about 3hrs and cost about $300 total. They are great.
I had the exhaust system done at once and gains on my site. If you have a good cat-back and hi-flow cat you should see nice gains.
Vic'89 also realized nice gains from his custom front Y, hi-flow cat and TPIS cat-back.
I bought my 2 1/2" SS pipe from MAD and it fit perfectly. It is a great improvement over the stock pipe. There is a Walker/Dynomax set in Ecklers cataloge that is EPA 49 state legal with their 3 way converter. The pipe is pretty crappy looking though.
If you are going to replace it put lots of penetrating oil on the manifold to Y-pipe bolts and drive the car the heating and cooling helps loosen the bolts. They can be a real PITA. I had to get the torch out on a couple of mine.
One other thought. If you ever plan on putting headers on the car, now is the time.to do it. Forget the Y-pipe and get a nice set of Hookers. If you plan serios mods in the future the stock shorties won't cut it.
FWIW:
I truly feel you can get a system that performs really well custom made for you at a local muffler shop. Do some homework, maybe get a little dirty, save $$. I have done the systems from the catalogs on my car. The prices they charge are out of line IMHO. It can be done better and cheaper. It might involve some extra legwork on your behalf tho. Let us know what you decide, this is a hot-button topic for me and would like to see your results.
