Has anyone installed those Dust / Moisture shields that you can buy from Ecklers/Mid America, etc.? They are supposed to keep dust/moisture out of the engine compartment - and install inside the front wheel wells. I have a couple, and was thinking of installing them this weekend (94 Lt1 Coupe).
I was wondering:
1. How do you install them? (They don't come with directions.
2. Do they work?
Just curious. Any info anyone has would be appreciated.
1. The front wheel wells are made up of four pieces: front section, mid section, rear section, and upper section (which is attached to the underside of the hood).
If you buy the hard plastic version, you have to remove the wheel well mid section (about four or six 10mm hex-head fender bolts), and replace it with the dust shield. If you buy the flexible dust shield, you can install it right over the stock wheel well mid section. In either case, you need to remove (and reuse) the 10mm hex-head fender bolts holding the wheel well mid section in place.
2. Yes, they do work well at keeping dust and moisture out of the engine bay far better than just the stock wheel wells alone. They won't eliminate it completely, but 80%-90%.
However, they do have a drawback in that they retain a bit more heat under the hood because they cover the large openings in the wheel well center sections where the upper A-arms pass through. But the amount they hold in is nothing to concern yourself over. I've had a set on my car for over 4 or 5 years now, and they've never been a problem.
